Making Waves Through Acts of Kindness

2 MIN READ

In my work, I have the privilege of meeting many newcomers to Canada. Many of them tell me how much they appreciate Halton and Hamilton’s strong sense of community, generosity, and the way people step up to help one another. For many newcomers, it’s a new and inspiring experience to see how deeply volunteering is woven into the fabric of community life here.

Volunteering has always been a part of my life. I can still remember being a young child, sitting at the kitchen table helping my mother stuff envelopes for United Way. It was simple work, but even then, I felt part of something bigger—something that mattered. Those early experiences sparked a passion in me for community service that has only grown over the years.

Today, I see that same spark in the countless volunteers who dedicate their time, skills, and energy to helping our community thrive. Volunteering is about more than just showing up—it’s about creating lasting change. And it’s incredible to see how many people in Halton and Hamilton embrace that spirit. Their dedication helps ensure vital programs and services are there for our most vulnerable neighbours.

This year, as we celebrate National Volunteer Week (April 27–May 3, 2025) under the theme Volunteers Make Waves, I am reminded of the profound and lasting impact volunteers have on our community. Like waves in the ocean, each act of volunteerism creates ripples—building momentum, growing in strength, and shaping the communities we live, play and work in. Whether it’s a single kind gesture or years of dedicated service, every effort contributes to a movement of change that strengthens our community as a whole.

At United Way Halton & Hamilton, we see this impact every day. Volunteers are the lifeblood of our work—from our Board and Campaign Cabinet to the Community Impact Cabinet and so many other volunteers. Their influence extends far beyond our organization. Our volunteers fuel the success of the programs that we support, lending their skills, time, and passion to everything from fundraising and event planning to mentorship and advocacy.

What I love most about volunteerism is its ability to bring people together. In an era where many feel disconnected, volunteering creates a sense of belonging. It fuels our empathy, strengthens relationships, and reminds us that we are all part of something bigger than ourselves.

This National Volunteer Week, I encourage you to think about the waves you can make. I would like to invite you to be part of something special—Show Your Local Love Day on May 14, 2025. It’s a chance to come together and make a real difference in our community. Whether you’re conducting mock interviews for job seekers, tidying gardens, or writing cards for seniors, every act of kindness counts.

Volunteering can be as simple as offering your time and skills to brighten someone’s day or help them overcome a challenge. It’s also an opportunity to connect with others who share the same passion for making our community stronger.

I encourage you to sign up today and help us create lasting impact through small actions that add up to something truly powerful.

To all our volunteers, past and present— thank you! Your generosity, kindness, and commitment continue to make tidal waves in our community.

With gratitude,

Brad Park
