Elbows Up for Labour: Celebrating Solidarity in Action

2 MIN READ

Labour Day has always been a time to recognize the contributions of workers and the power of collective action.

But in these times where uncertainty is becoming the norm, job security feels fragile, and support systems are stretched thin, Labour Day takes on even greater meaning.

It reminds us of the values that hold our communities together. Solidarity, resilience, and looking out for one another.

As we recognize Labour Day on Monday, September 1, 2025, we take pride in celebrating the strength, and unity of workers across our communities.

This Labour Day, we honour a growing movement rooted in supporting locally made, locally led, and locally built efforts. It’s a reflection of our collective commitment to standing strong together. Protecting what matters most, showing up for one another, and ensuring no one is left behind when help is needed.

At United Way Halton & Hamilton, we see this spirit in action every day through our long-standing partnership with the Labour movement. For over a century, Labour has stood shoulder-to-shoulder with United Way to build stronger, safer, more inclusive communities.

Together, we’ve done more than just talk, we’ve taken action.

From funding vital services to launching programs that support workers and their families, our shared commitment to community care is stronger than ever.

One great example is our Labour Community Advocacy Program.

This initiative gives union members the tools they need to be advocates in their workplaces and unions, connecting people to supports, navigating community resources, and offering a listening ear when it matters most.

Our labour programs and services representatives work hand-in-hand with local unions and leaders to engage community and connect individuals to services that respond to the challenges they’re facing.

This partnership is anchored by the continued collaboration with the Oakville & District Labour Council and the Hamilton & District Labour Council, both of whom play a crucial role in supporting workers at every stage of life.

But Labour’s impact doesn’t stop at the picket line or the workplace.

Unions across Canada are some of United Way’s most loyal and generous supporters. They give. They volunteer. They show up.

Labour leaders serve on our boards and committees, and through union-led programs like co-op housing, childcare, and frontline services, they ensure our communities don’t just survive, but thrive.

This kind of leadership is exactly what our United in ACTION campaign is all about. Rolling up our sleeves, working together, and driving real change from the ground up.

So this Labour Day, we want to say thank you.

To the workers, the union leaders, the advocates, and the everyday heroes who never stop fighting for fairness, dignity, and hope – you inspire us.

Let’s keep our elbows up and hearts open.
