As the father of two daughters, I think often about the kind of community I want them to grow up in. I want them to live in a place where equality isn’t just a goal we aspire to, but a way of life. Where they are treated fairly, paid equitably, respected for their ideas, and given the same opportunity to lead and succeed as anyone else.
But this isn’t only about my daughters. It’s about the kind of community we all want to call home. One where opportunity isn’t determined by gender, and where talent and ambition are met with equal access and respect.
When women have equitable access to opportunity, the impact extends far beyond one person.
Families are stronger. Workplaces are more innovative. Communities are more resilient.
Equality is not just the right thing to pursue, it’s essential to building a healthier, more prosperous future for everyone.
A Smart Investment in Our Future
This year’s International Women’s Day theme, Give to Gain, captures this simple but powerful truth. Gender equality is not only the right thing to do. It is a smart and necessary investment in healthier societies and stronger economies.
Yet the reality in Canada today reminds us how far we still have to go.
Women still earn 12.6% less than men in hourly wages. They remain underrepresented in leadership, carry a disproportionate share of caregiving responsibilities, and are more likely to experience housing insecurity and gender-based violence.
For Indigenous, racialized, disabled, and 2SLGBTQI+ women, the barriers are even greater. Too many women and girls are still being held back from reaching their full potential, not because of a lack of talent or ambition, but because of systemic barriers that limit access to opportunity.
Lifelines That Change Lives
At United Way Halton and Hamilton, we invest in programs that lift women and girls up and create lasting pathways to success.
These are not simply services. They are lifelines.
Consider a woman fleeing abuse with her child, unsure where to turn. Through United Way supported transitional housing, she finds safety. With access to nutritious food, counselling, and mental health supports, she begins to heal. Through job readiness training and financial literacy programs, she gains the skills and confidence to rebuild her future.
She moves from crisis to stability. From surviving to thriving.
And when she thrives, her child thrives. Her workplace benefits. Her community grows stronger.
That is what Give to Gain looks like in action.
Now Is the Time to Act
International Women’s Day 2026 is more than a commemoration. It is a moment to deepen our commitment and invest in lasting change right here at home.
If you believe in a future where every girl grows up knowing her worth, and every woman has the freedom to lead, create, and succeed, now is the time to act.
You can help create that future.
So this March 8, let’s do more than acknowledge the challenges. Let’s be part of the solution.
Choose to Give to Gain. Your support is key to building a community where women and girls have the opportunity to thrive, and where all of us move forward together.
