Remembering, Honouring, and Continuing the Legacy

2 MIN READ

Every November 11, we pause to reflect on the courage and sacrifice of those who gave their lives in service to our country. We also honour the dedication of those who continue to serve today.

For me, Remembrance Day has always been personal. My grandfather served in World War II, and took part in the Battle of Dieppe in France. Like many veterans, he rarely spoke about what he endured during that terrifying mission, one where hundreds of Canadians lost their lives, and thousands more were wounded or captured.

Looking through old photographs of him and his comrades, I’m struck by their quiet strength and the unimaginable sacrifices they made for the freedoms we enjoy today.

It’s a powerful reminder that our peace is built on the courage and resilience of those who came before us.

Beyond the Battlefield

As we honour those who have served, we also recognize that the impact of war and service continues long after the battlefield. Many veterans face challenges that can be invisible to the rest of us, mental health struggles, trauma, and the difficulty of adjusting to civilian life.

That’s where your United Way steps in.

United Way Halton & Hamilton serves as the backbone of a network of support that connects veterans and their families to the help they need to heal, rebuild, and thrive.

Through United Way–supported programs, veterans and the community at large can access trauma-informed counselling, wraparound mental health supports, and free, non-judgmental services for survivors of violence.

Families and children experiencing depression or anxiety also receive the care they need, ensuring no one has to face these challenges alone.

United in ACTION

Wearing a poppy and observing a moment of silence on Remembrance Day is about more than remembering the past. It’s a promise to carry its lessons forward.

United in ACTION, we honour the sacrifices of those who served through our own acts of compassion, connection, and community care – today and every day.

To all who have served, and continue to serve our country, a heartfelt thank you.

We honour you today, and every day, through our collective action.

In remembrance and with gratitude,

Brad Park
