Last week’s horrific violence in Georgia represents a terrible intersection of hatred toward women, Anti-East Asian violence and other forms of oppression. Many of us, as well as our colleagues, community partners and neighbours are hurting, and grieving, as a result.
United Way stands against all forms of racism, misogyny and discrimination. These oppressive forces exploit existing vulnerabilities, destroy the potential of people and communities, and are the antithesis of the work we do at United Way.
In the past year here in Halton, Hamilton and across Canada, Anti-East Asian racism has escalated throughout our communities from historical contexts, into the present day. Chinese Canadian National Council for Social Justice ( Ccncsj) has tracked 900+ incidents of anti-Asian racism since this pandemic began. https://www.covidracism.ca/
Any community members in need of support as you process this traumatic event are encouraged to call 211, a free, 24 hour helpline that is supported by United Way. 211 Central – Findhelp’s service navigators can help you find resources in your area.
We will work collectively with you to help our region grow and thrive by combating Anti-East Asian Racism here at home.
