Overview: United Way Halton & Hamilton (UWHH) brings people and resources together to create lasting social change. As the Senior Manager, Labour Community Services, you will play a critical role in strengthening relationships between Labour and UWHH, mobilizing resources, and advancing community initiatives. This position fosters collaboration among labour organizations, UWHH, and community agencies to drive impactful fundraising, advocacy, and engagement efforts.

Responsibilities:

Organizational Leadership

  • Strengthen mutual understanding between Labour and UWHH by educating volunteers, staff, and community agencies on Labour’s role (e.g., LC, CLC, workplace and community efforts) and communicating UWHH’s role within the labour community.
  • Support UWHH’s annual campaigns by engaging organized Labour in fundraising, community engagement, agency relations, marketing, and related initiatives.
  • Provide strategic insights on emerging community issues, identifying opportunities for collaboration between Labour and UWHH.
  • Offer strategic guidance to UWHH departments to inform goals, plans, and procedures related to Labour partnerships.
  • Execute the Labour Program and Services (LPS) annual plan, including budgeting, program direction, committee work, and communications.
  • Collaborate with UW Labour Programs and Services staff across regions to exchange knowledge and advance movement-wide initiatives.
  • Execute an annual work plan, jointly approved by the UWHH President & CEO, LC President, and CLC representative, aligning with strategic goals.
  • Provide regular reports to UWHH and LC/CLC on program progress and impact.

Liaison between Organized Labour and UWC

  • Ensure clear, timely, and consistent communication between UWHH, the LC, and the CLC to maintain strong working relationships.
  • Support the LC and CLC in key activities such as volunteer recruitment for UWHH, policy development, media preparation, and education/training programs.
  • Maintain and update a database of active union members in the community.
  • Identify and facilitate solutions to emerging challenges in collaboration with UWHH, LC, and CLC.

Development and Mobilization of Resources

  • Strengthen local labour support and endorsement for UWHH initiatives and fundraising.
  • Recruit, place, and support labour volunteers across all levels of UWHH in collaboration with LC, CLC, and UWHH departments.
  • Develop and implement recognition programs for labour participation, working with relevant UWHH teams.
  • Collaborate with UWHH departments to align priorities and strategic plans.
  • Represent UWHH at key community events to enhance visibility and stakeholder engagement.

Education and Training

  • Develop, promote, deliver, and evaluate Labour Community Advocate training and related educational programs.
  • Design training curricula and maintain engagement with a network of community-union activists.
  • Provide training to UWHH staff, volunteers, and agencies on the labour movement, including LC structures, policies, and key issues.
  • Educate LC and local affiliates on UWHH, United Way Centraide Canada (UWCC), and their policies, structures, and initiatives.
  • Promote awareness of relevant CLC and UWCC programs and policies.
  • Organize and deliver conferences, forums, and seminars on community and labour issues, as budget permits.
  • Participate in training programs, conferences, and educational initiatives hosted by the CLC, LC, UWCC, and other relevant organizations, as budget permits.

Qualifications:

  • Proven experience in the labour movement (e.g., elected, appointed, or staff officer roles) with a deep understanding of union structures and decision-making processes.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel) and database management, with the ability to navigate digital tools, analyze data, and adapt to new technology platforms.
  • Experience with CRM databases, digital engagement tools, or analytics platforms to support relationship management
  • Experience with UWHH or community organizations (preferred).
  • Strong teamwork, interpersonal, and stakeholder engagement skills, with a commitment to inclusivity and collaboration.
  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal), with experience delivering presentations and training sessions.
  • Strong organizational, facilitation, and problem-solving skills.
  • Proven ability to manage stakeholder relationships effectively and navigate complex or contentious issues.
  • Demonstrated initiative, independence, and the ability to drive projects to completion.
